Handwoven with love, natural pandanus leaves are carefully woven in a circular pattern, reinforced with hand-stitching on the reverse for a truly handcrafted mat. Each placemat helps to preserve and promote fine weaving techniques mastered by Rotuman women from Fiji. Rotuma island group is home to a large and unique indigenous ethnic group which constitutes a recognisable minority within the population of Fiji, known as "Rotumans". Its population at the 2017 census was 1,594, although many more Rotumans live on mainland Fijian islands, totaling 10,000. Travel by ferry takes several days to reach the island. Access to markets is especially challenging for these communities.
