Small Mat Iri Buli

$170

Handwoven small mat for wall, floor and table spaces.

The "Iri Buli" black round mat brings all the wow power of traditional Pacific designs, inspired by traditional fan shapes. A mud-dye process takes about two weeks to cure, followed by a leaf stew bath with various plant species to darken the color and create a shiny finish on the black pandanus leaves. Handmade in small batches, beautiful conversation pieces for your wall or floor spaces.

75-85 cm, or 2.5-3.2 feet in diameter (sizes will vary)

About the Artisans

Our collection of handwoven round mats are made by remote artisans from Nairai Island. This island is located within the Lomaiviti Island Group, which is well-known for their highly-skilled weaving. Historically a voyaging region, a large percentage of community members intermarried with persons from other island nations, further enriching the skilled artisan background of this island’s community. Mat weaving provides a critical and sustainable source of cash income or artisans isolated from local and international markets. Through weaving, their skills, knowledge and identities are preserved and promoted.
